Internet provider Lumos has announced plans to construct over 600 miles of fiber optic technology in New Hanover County, North Carolina. The project, which was first announced in April 2023, will involve an investment of $56 million and will bring 100% fiber-optic internet to areas including Wilmington and Carolina Beach. Lumos is currently in the permitting process and aims to build the fiber optic infrastructure in the least disruptive and safest manner possible. The company is partnering with the City of Wilmington, homeowners, businesses, and developers to ensure the successful completion of the project.
Lumos Networks and NorthState merged to form Lumos in August 2022, and the company is excited to bring its fiber optic technology to the growing city of Wilmington. The CEO of Lumos, Brian Standing, believes that the company’s investment in optical fiber will allow Wilmington to enter a new digitally empowered era, where ultra-fast and reliable internet access is crucial for supporting economic growth.
The president and CEO of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, Natalie English, also highlighted the importance of high-speed internet for the city’s workforce, innovation, and community connection. Lumos’ investment in fiber optic infrastructure will enhance residents’ quality of life and support the increasing demands for internet access in Wilmington.
