Nigeria will begin the automation process for passport applications on January 8, 2024, according to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The new system will allow Nigerians to apply for and complete their passport application online, eliminating the need for in-person interactions. The automated system will include processes such as uploading passport photos and supporting documents. The move towards passport application automation is part of the government’s efforts to enhance the country’s security architecture by enabling swift detection of fake passport applications and reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks. The deployment of document verification officers across all local government areas in the country will further ensure a more secure and reliable application process. The Nigerian government also plans to establish passport front offices in key cities across the United Kingdom to streamline and expedite passport renewal and collection procedures for the Nigerian diaspora.
